Shika: Out of the silence the sound is born - Paulina Derbez

George Ignatieff Theatre :: September 22, 2012, 8:00 pm

Paulina Derbez performs the piece Shika with amazing virtuosity and command… bringing us into the mysterious world of the eagle with the use of her violin, her voice and very simple choreography. While it is amazing that she can do all these things at the same time, it is her artistic vision that allows us to forget this complexity and be transported into a state in which we feel that we experience the eagle’s point of view. Paulina uses her voice wonderfully… the musical movement between violin and voice is very satisfying and her fine sense of theatre amplifies this.”
- Fides Krucker, Canadian contemporary music singer

“Paulina Derbez…is a true paradigm breaker!”
- Ricardo Archer, Festival of Images & Words, September 2011

“The Mexican Paulina Derbez, an accomplished violinist (a member of the Ontario Philharmonic orchestra), presented a highly innovative musical and dramatic performance which is a musical offering that mixes voice, drama, and violin in a way that captivates the audience…”
- Freddy Vélez, El correo canadiense, October 2011

SHIKA: OUT OF THE SILENCE THE SOUND IS BORN is a solo performance.

Violin, voice, and choreography are intertwined in this innovative multidisciplinary event where the musician embodies different characters.

Through sound and silence the artist draws the audience into a magical experience, challenging the classical concept of a concert performance.

Parts of this performance have been previously presented at the Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto, and broadcast by the CBC.

Cast & Crew
Paulina Derbez - violin, voice, & choreography
Diego Jacome - lighting design, projection, costume, & stage production
