The Actors Training Summer Conservatory provides a unique well-structured comprehensive introductory training ground that addresses the actor’s body, mind and soul. The day-to-day curriculum of the Actors Training Summer Conservatory is carefully crafted to help the actor explore, grow and build the necessary connections between the different subject matters to create a richer, more dynamic and skilled actor. Students are encouraged to be fearless and explorative in a non-judgmental environment. The Actors Training Summer Conservatory at Hart House marks the 16th year that Kevin McCormick has nurtured, encouraged and served the next generation of artists, creators and educators through Conservatory Training Programs for the Actors Tutorial. The Actors Training Summer Conservatory is designed as an introductory (journeyman) experience and is ideal for many prospective students: - Creative individuals looking to explore the world of acting for the first time - Those who have been involved in an academic-based theatre-arts program looking for more hands-on training - Those planning to enter a full-time actors training program and are seeking an advance primer - Recent high-school graduates interested in the performing arts who are ready to take the next step in their development - Teachers/educators at all levels looking for professional development and an opportunity to acquire new skills and teaching tools - Professional and semi-professional artists wishing to reconnect to the roots of actor-training and those moments of re-discovery - Actors who have been away from the profession and need preparation to return - Film and television actors needing a deeper theatre-actor training to strengthen their film-acting skills - Film and television actors planning to transition into stage work “You will never be the same as an actor after doing this conservatory. This exciting series will involve such topics as: Working with a Director, Stage Craft, Building a Career, The Art of the Interview, Story Telling, Alexander Technique and more. “The amount I gained over the last 4 weeks is a hundred times more valuable than the amount I gained from a full year of classes.” - Former Conservatory Student Registration details and deadlines: - The Actors Training Summer Conservatory is a full-time program, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, August 9th to September 3rd - The Actors Training Summer Conservatory is physically intense, concentrated and demanding - Participants must bring a yoga mat each day - Out of class homework is required - Enrollment is limited - The cost is $2,400 (plus HST) - There is a $50 administrative charge for all withdrawals Each applicant will be contacted as soon as they register with details regarding what to prepare for the Conservatory and information on the various arrangements that have been made regarding food, refreshments, location, supplies etc. About the artistic director Kevin McCormick is one of the most sought after acting instructors in Toronto, having worked with thousands of artists over the years and is currently the Director of the acclaimed Equity Showcase Theatre and Artistic Director of the Theatre and Empowerment division for The Creative Classes at Hart House. Kevin also teaches regularly for Equity Showcase Theatre, The Actors Tutorial and co-ordinates and teaches within a unique arts program at the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University. Other teaching highlights include York University, The Ryerson Theatre School, The Canadian College of Dance, The National Ballet of Canada, Young Peoples Theatre, The George Randolph Studio Dance Theatre, Leah Posluns Theatre School, and The University of New Brunswick. Mr. McCormick has produced and directed a variety of productions and has held the position of Artistic Director for two Ontario Summer Theatres. He is a founding member of the Toronto Association of Acting Studios where he has also served as President. About the instructors Liza Balkan is a Dora Award Winning actor, writer, director, teacher, singer and dancer and has been working in Theatre for 28 years. Ms. Balkan has numerous directing highlights, including work for Tarragon, Toronto Fringe, Summer Works, Tapestry New Works, the Shaw Festival, Ryerson Theatre School, Persephone, Stratford, National Arts Centre, and Soul Pepper. Her many teaching appointments include Sheridan College, Seneca College, and the Soul Pepper Outreach. She is presently a writer in residence for the acclaimed Crows Theatre in Toronto and about to join the faculty of the acclaimed Equity Showcase Theatre. Tom Diamond has worked nationally and internationally and highlights include the world premiere of Chan Ka Nin’s Iron Road, a Dora Award winning production, the Chalmers Award Winning Florence the Lady with the Lamp, five productions for Pacific Opera Victoria, nine with the Canadian Opera Company. His production of Squonk was an off-Broadway hit which transferred to Broadway where it won the American Theatre Wing’s Hewes Award. Mr. Diamond has taught nationally and internationally, including at the University of Toronto for UCC Drama and the Faculty of Music, 12 years with the Grad and Undergrad Programs at York University, Theatre Ontario, the New England Conservatory, The Glen Gould School, University of Manitoba and many more. Tom Diamond was also the star of the hit Gemini Award winning TV series, Bathroom Divas. Cathy Smith has taught acting, voice, text and movement in many diverse contexts including the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama, University of Toronto, University of Toronto at Scarborough College, the University of Guelph and Equity Showcase, including several acting conservatories with Kevin McCormick. As an actor, she has appeared in theatre, film and television in Toronto, Vancouver and New York. Memorable projects include The Tempest, Blood Sonata, Thirteen Hands, The Traveling Troupe Shopolavich, Death and the Maiden, The Tiger, The Winter’s Tale and Measure for Measure. A founding member of The Beacon Theatre (Toronto), she produced and performed in many productions, including Hedda Gabler and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. She has a PhD in Drama from the University of Toronto where she is also involved in teaching communication to health professionals. Irene Pauzer is head of the Voice Department and resident instructor in voice for the acclaimed Ryerson Theatre School, and a professional actor with many years of experience both on and off screen. She received her Masters from York University with a major in voice under renowned voice teacher David Smukler. Mike Kirby has been a professional actor for over 30 years and has appeared off-Broadway and in major theatres across Canada. Mr. Kirby has won twelve CLIO Awards for Advertising Excellence in his lengthy career as an actor, narrator, broadcaster, voice specialist and author. Kathryn Akin is a Canadian performer, teacher and director based in London, England where she has taught and directed for several leading British drama schools including The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, The Central School of Speech and Drama and Mount View Academy. She has just returned from performing in a lengthy run in London’s West End and has performed at the National Arts Centre, the Shaw Festival, The Grand Theatre, the Bristol, Old Vic, the Elgin and Royal Alex. Ms Akin is a certified Alexander Technique Specialist. Sean Sullivan is the winner of the US National Masters in Mime Tournament, a former student of Richmond Shepard (American Foremost Mime, pioneering teacher and author of the seminal text Mime: The Technique of Silence.) Mr. Sullivan also studied under Etienne De Croux (Master teacher and Marcel Marceau’s mentor). Sean Sullivan has worked as an actor and mime artist both nationally and internationally. He was dubbed “a virtual Nijinsky of performance art” by the New York Times and has performed at the renowned off-Broadway Theatre PS 122, as well as having toured with a series of physical workshops in Poland and the Czech Republic. Tedde Moore is a Dora and Genie award winning actress and has been a professional actress for almost 50 years. She is a founding member of The Actor's Repertory Company. Ms. Moore has co-written with actor Lynda Mason Green a book of Canadian performer's anecdotes, Standing Naked in the Wings. She has a Genie for her film work and enjoys ongoing affection for her role as Miss Shields in the cult film A Christmas Story. She won the 2002 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance, Independent Theatre. Tedde has taught for numerous training programs including Equity Showcase Theatre and Sheridan and is always in demand as a private coach and mentor. Sheena D. Robertson is a director and photographer, and is much in demand as a theatre facilitator. She revels in working in diverse settings – with inner city youth, teachers, artists, and at institutions such as the University of Toronto, York University, The Royal Conservatory and Equity Showcase Theatre. She is particularly interested in providing creative opportunities which access the soul and story of the artist, and in using collective collaboration techniques to empower actors to create their own theatrical projects. She has directed many such collaborative projects. Much of her artistic work centers on addressing issues of social justice. Through her company Whimsical Productions, she recently produced the film Gone, directed a series of experimental ‘shorts’ focusing on the concept of ‘self’, including a project with a group of young Muslim women, directed a documentary about advocacy in inner city Toronto, and has co-directed, translated and produced a new theatrical play entitled Lizardboy. She currently has two projects in development, a theatre piece entitled The Spaces In Between, and the Regent Park Project, and a feature length film exploring the struggles of a young black man as he tries to ‘bring himself up’ in Regent Park. She is also in production for a short film she is directing entitled Time Folds. Sheena studied theatre at the University of Toronto. She has a teaching degree, and a Masters in Education. Peggy Jane Hope is an actress, singer and song writer, having studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts, Ryerson Theatre School and the Humber Jazz program. Ms. Hope has a long list of performance credits and has recorded and performed in a variety of locations across Canada. Fiona Griffiths is a teacher, actor, clown, choreographer and body worker. She has a BFA in modern dance and an MFA in Multi-Media Performing Arts and Creative Process. She performed extensively in dance, theatre, clown and video. Fiona has taught in the graduate programs of York and Yale Universities and choreographed and coached for many professional theatre and dance companies. As well as running independent workshops, Fiona currently teaches at the Clown Farm and with the School of Toronto Dance Theatre. David Macniven has many years of experience as a professional actor and writer and has performed off-Broadway in the hit Toronto production of Bitter Girl. He has served as an elected leader for the Performers Union, the Alliance of Cinema Radio and Television Artists and as a Director on the Creative Arts Savings and Credit Union founding Board. Kate Lynch is a director, writer and educator and has taught with the National Theatre School, The Stratford Festival Conservatory, The Shaw Festival, George Brown Theatre School and the University of Toronto Drama Program. Directing highlights include appointments with the Shaw Festival, Blyth Festival and Theatre Passe Muraille. As a writer, works include Tales of the Blonde Assassin, directed by Sue Minor and adapted for CBC Radio and The Road to Hell (co-written with Michael Healey) and directed by Andy McKim at the Tarragon Theatre. Lynne Griffin is a Genie-nominated actress and one of Canada’s most established and successful actors. Having lived in Los Angeles for many years Lynne has accumulated a lengthy list of film, television movie and TV credits. Some highlights include Black Christmas, The Amateur, Strange Brew, Heavenly Kid, Jewel, Felicity, An American Girls Adventure, Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion, Every Person is Guilty. Lynne has also worked on stage at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, The Shaw Festival and Resurgence Theatre.
